I'm about to share a story that will take you on a journey through the unique experience of sleeping in a church fellowship hall in Christmas, Florida. It's an adventure that will leave you with a deeper understanding of the challenges and joys of long-distance hiking.
Despite a late night, I woke up feeling surprisingly refreshed. Maybe it was because I didn't sleep as deeply as usual, but I was ready to tackle the day. Our plan was to hike another 38 miles, and the town of Christmas was our destination. Little did I know, this town held a special surprise - a church with a fellowship hall that welcomed thru hikers like me!
But here's where it gets controversial... Some might question the wisdom of hiking with a lack of sleep, but I was determined to make the most of it. And let me tell you, the energy boost I got from a delicious Chick-fil-A breakfast was just what I needed. I ordered a frozen coffee and a breakfast burrito, a combo I'd never tried before. It was the perfect fuel for the road ahead.
As we resumed our hike, I couldn't help but reflect on my previous encounters on this trail. One memory stood out - a conversation with a stranger that left me feeling uneasy. It's a reminder of the importance of trusting your instincts, especially when you're alone in the woods.
And this is the part most people miss... The trail can be a teacher, and I've grown as a hiker and as a person. I've learned to navigate challenges and make tough decisions, like when to push through and when to take a break. It's a constant balance of physical and mental endurance.
Today, we hiked through Little Big Econ State Forest, where the trail took us through dry boardwalks and sandy paths. But as the day progressed, the conditions changed. We had to navigate flooded areas, and it was a constant battle to keep our feet dry. It's a fine line between preserving your energy and accepting the inevitable wet feet.
So, what's the right approach? Some might say it's better to just get it over with and embrace the wet feet. Others might argue for taking the time to avoid the water. What do you think? Leave your thoughts in the comments!
As we continued, the trail became a swampy adventure, and we had to adapt our pace. It was a slow and steady journey, but we made it through. We even found a beautiful campsite with picnic tables under a majestic oak tree. A much-needed break before tackling the remaining miles.
Eventually, we reached the town of Christmas, and the decorations were a delightful surprise. It's a town that truly lives up to its name, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of wonder.
We did a big resupply at the general store, stocking up for the next few days. It was a lot to carry, but we were determined. And as we made our way to the fellowship hall, we had an unexpected encounter - a bobcat crossing the road right in front of us! It was a thrilling moment that added to the magic of the day.
At the fellowship hall, we settled in for the night. I washed my legs and dried my shoes, and we crashed for the night. It had been a long and eventful day, and I was grateful for the comfort of the hall.
