The heartbreaking loss of Phoenix Spicer, a former AFL player, has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting his partner, Ky-ya Nicholson Ward, to emphasize the critical importance of health awareness. This comes after she revealed that Spicer's untimely death was due to a "sudden brain aneurysm," a shocking development for those who knew him.
At just 23 years old, Spicer, who played three seasons with North Melbourne, passed away in early January, leaving friends and family grappling with grief. In an emotional post on Facebook, Nicholson Ward expressed her profound sorrow, stating, "My heart is broken." She felt compelled to share the details surrounding Spicer's passing to raise awareness about health issues that can affect anyone unexpectedly.
"Phoenix took his last breath on Friday the 2nd of January, but he did NOT take his own life. I found him… we tried with everything we could to save him, but we didn’t know he was already gone. It was the most traumatic experience of my life," she shared in her poignant message.
Nicholson Ward went on to explain that days later, they learned of the cause of his death—a sudden brain aneurysm. She noted that prior to this tragedy, Spicer had never complained of any headaches or indicated that he was unwell. This revelation highlights a crucial point: serious health issues can manifest without any warning signs.
"Please, if you can, get checked and listen to your body. This can happen to anyone, at any time. My heart is broken," she urged, underscoring the need for vigilance regarding personal health.
To honor Spicer’s memory, two private memorial services will be held this week in Melbourne and Adelaide for family and friends to pay their respects.
Spicer, who was drafted as Pick 42 in the 2020 national draft, played 12 games for the Kangaroos before being delisted at the end of the 2023 season. He also contributed to the Footscray Bulldogs in the VFL, playing 18 games across two seasons. Just before his passing, he had signed with Hoppers Crossing in the Western Region Football League for the upcoming 2026 season. This tragic loss serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of listening to our bodies.
