And this is the part most people miss... Unfortunately, Tomlinson's unwavering commitment to a "glass-half-full" outlook is precisely what dilutes his otherwise self-assured songs. For an album intended as his definitive artistic statement, it feels surprisingly light on substance. "Is it only human to escape into the delusion?" he ponders on the ethereal track "Lemonade." While escapism might be a necessary coping mechanism for him emotionally, it can sometimes lead to less captivating art. Consider the aptly named "Lazy," where Tomlinson muses, "Maybe it's the ocean in the air/Maybe it's just that I don't really care." Other songs, such as "Jump the Gun" and "On Fire," focus on romantic entanglements, making the album feel like an attempt to emulate the sound of late-career Ed Sheeran – music that fits a popular mold but lacks a unique Tomlinson fingerprint.
The most intriguing moments on this album, like "Broken Bones" and "Lucid," offer tantalizing glimpses of a deeper complexity beneath Tomlinson's new sunny demeanor. On "Broken Bones," he sings, "Nobody said it’s easy/But I’ve always loved a fight," accompanied by an engaging blend of synths and charged production. Meanwhile, "Lucid" revisits the album's titular question, as Tomlinson tries to reassure himself, "I’ll be OK/I’ll dream awake." This offers a refreshing moment of genuine uncertainty, but the album concludes before Tomlinson can fully explore these more nuanced feelings.
