In a thrilling finish, the Golden Knights staged a remarkable comeback to overcome the Maple Leafs, clinching victory with an overtime goal from Eichel. It was a dramatic moment when Mark Stone had the puck stolen by Morgan Rielly during a two-on-one play. However, Stone swiftly regained possession and set up Eichel, who skillfully maneuvered to his backhand before firing a shot that sailed past goaltender Joseph Woll.
Eichel's decisive goal came on the heels of a stunning equalizer from Tomas Hertl, who netted a goal just seven seconds before the end of regulation, leveling the score at 5-5. Hertl positioned himself perfectly in the low slot, redirecting a centering pass from Eichel past Woll’s glove hand.
This late-game excitement followed an earlier moment of frustration for the Golden Knights, who believed they had tied the game when Pavel Dorofeyev scored what would have been his third goal. Unfortunately for Vegas, Toronto challenged the play for offside, and after a thorough video review, the goal was disallowed.
In this match, Eichel stood out, finishing with one goal and three assists, while Dorofeyev contributed two goals, and Stone added a goal along with two assists for the Golden Knights, who now boast a six-game winning streak, including a previous overtime win against the Los Angeles Kings. Goaltender Adin Hill returned from injury to make 23 saves in his first game since October 20.
On the Maple Leafs' side, William Nylander made an impact with a goal and an assist before leaving the game midway through the first period due to a lower-body injury. Toronto had entered this game looking to rebound from a disappointing 6-1 loss against the Utah Mammoth. John Tavares also registered a goal and an assist, while Auston Matthews contributed another goal and Woll stopped 27 shots.
The scoring began early, with Rielly giving the Maple Leafs a 1-0 lead just two minutes into the first period. He fired a shot from the left circle that found its way past Hill after Nylander won a crucial battle for the puck along the right boards. Just a few minutes later, at 5:03, Nylander doubled the lead to 2-0, deftly redirecting a centering pass from Matias Maccelli to score with a shot over Hill's blocker.
Sadly for Nylander, he exited the game at 8:48 of the first period, having missed the previous six games due to another lower-body injury.
The Golden Knights responded as Dorofeyev narrowed the gap to 2-1 with a power-play goal at 8:12, executing a one-timer from the right circle off a quick feed from Marner at the point. Matthews quickly answered back at 9:57, redirecting a pass from Jake McCabe into the net, extending the Maple Leafs’ lead to 3-1.
Kolesar helped Vegas respond again, making it 3-2 at 5:51 of the second period by spinning off Rielly and tapping in the rebound from Braeden Bowman’s shot. Tavares then increased the Maple Leafs’ advantage to 4-2 at 12:46, scoring on a power play when Maccelli’s one-timer deflected off his stick at the post.
Dorofeyev struck again for the Golden Knights, bringing the score to 4-3 early in the third period at 2:10 with another power-play goal, this time benefiting from a fortunate bounce off the end boards following Marner’s shot.
Toronto's Scott Laughton then extended their lead to 5-3 at 8:58, capitalizing on a 2-on-1 breakaway with a one-timer from the right circle following a pass from Matthew Knies. However, Stone made it 5-4 just two minutes later at 10:14, taking advantage of a chaotic play in front of the net where his initial shot was saved but he managed to push the puck into the open net after Woll was caught out of position. Notably, Stone is enjoying a fantastic run, with 17 points from nine goals and eight assists over the last ten games.
